After the reign of Edmund Ironside, England was ruled by Danish and Norman kings. Here is a list of the kings who ruled between Edmund Ironside and William the Conqueror:
- Sweyn Forkbeard (1013-1014) – Danish king who briefly ruled over England after forcing Æthelred the Unready into exile.
- Cnut the Great (1016-1035) – Danish king who gained control of England after the death of Edmund Ironside and established the Danish line of kings.
- Harold Harefoot (1035-1040) – Son of Cnut and Emma of Normandy. He succeeded Cnut as king, but his reign was brief and marked by controversy.
- Harthacnut (1040-1042) – Son of Cnut and Emma of Normandy. He became king after the death of Harold Harefoot and ruled until his own death.
- Edward the Confessor (1042-1066) – Son of Æthelred the Unready and Emma of Normandy. He was the last Anglo-Saxon king of England before the Norman Conquest. Edward’s reign was characterized by political and dynastic struggles.
With the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066, the stage was set for the Norman Conquest of England led by William, Duke of Normandy (later known as William the Conqueror). William claimed the English throne and successfully defeated Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king, at the Battle of Hastings in October 1066, establishing Norman rule over England.
Harold II, also known as Harold Godwinson, was the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. He reigned for a relatively short period from January 6, 1066, until his death on October 14, 1066. His reign lasted for approximately nine months and eight days. Harold II’s reign was dominated by the events leading up to and including the Norman Conquest of England, culminating in the Battle of Hastings, where he was defeated by William the Conqueror.
